Because in the context of big floppy drag slicks a pair is plenty for laying the power down anyway if the weight is laid out right, so having to drive 4 wheels instead is just extra transmission losses, extra friction losses for the rest of the track and extra weight.

If they were all running on normal road tyres (I mean on Toyo T1R or something not "road legal" drag tyres), then 4wd would win.
