I'd use a clay bar and plenty of lube. That's the safest way. They're designed purely to remove contaminants from the surface and not from below it, which all other abrasives are.

Clay bars were originally designed for removing overspray. The fact they've gone on to remove other heavily stuck-on grime etc is purely a bonus/afterthought!
