I have a 2001 as a daily and can't fault it as a cheap car really. Good on fuel and great to drive, the handling makes up for the lack of power although its ok for a moderate size 1600 motor. Mine has just clocked 223k today and still drives fine.
If it hasn't had a belt I'd get that done before doing anything else, its not a particularly difficult job.
Some focus seem to go scabby round the rear arches more that others so check there. Mine also has a little below the wing mirrors on the doors, been like it since I bought it 5 years ago
Other than that just general stuff you'd look for on any car really
