Could be just a manufacturing defect, damaged teeth on the ring gear, solenoid engaging to late and smashing into the ring gear, damaged from dropping or hitting when installing.

I bought it new for my xr3i cabby and used the car maybe 20 times! Car has been laid up for approx 1 year and i took it off the escort, fitted to the cosworth engine and here we are lol im confused
