I've just replaced the head light surrounds on a cabby and left the original slam panel in place for the same reason of the copy panel being UTTER shite, I've done the same on my RWD ERST as well and it is very easy. The copy panels only have about 6 very poor spot welds on each head light to drill out, the original panel has a few more but with a spot weld drill bit drilling from inside the engine bay the panel comes out easy and well worth the effort.
