I've just purchased (collect tomorrow) a 06 ST TDCi Estate with 50K on the clock and yes I know I could have got a Titanium for less, but when you come to resell the ST will still stand out in a sea of Zetec and Titanium Mondeos.
But that's only half the story if you want something that looks the part and handles better then the ST is the way to go in my opinion. I've been looking for a tow car, but wanted some class and performance too, been looking at X-Type 2.2, Passat, other Mondeos and others manufacturers including I dread to say I even considered a French car!
It all depends what you want, I felt overall although the ST costs more in my case the deal I got from the deal worked. It was one of the best value (not cheapest) ST estates at £5900, but factor in low 50k mileage, new clutch kit (fitted this Tuesday), four tyre (fitted December), new rear box (fitted December), full ford service history and that the last owner really looked after the car I feel it was best value.
Yes for a Mondeo the ST it's top money, but you go find a rare top spec car with that sort of history and I think you'd struggle...I should know I've been looking for the past two months for a car that ticks all my boxes.
I had been considering buying a newer car with more miles too, including Mazda 6 Sport 2.2, but in comparison to the ST it's not sporty and rattles when you shut the doors. Yes it's might have more tech, but your not getting anything better in my option vs buying a high spec older car like the ST.
You need to take out the cars you like the look of and weigh up what you really want, in my case the ST I purchased with it's new clutch and all the other bits I've asked the dealer to do it only really cost me £4600 and should (fingers crossed) be trouble free for years.
Just do it, you'll be the envy of every other Mondeo driver.
