Help with automatic gearbox
Drove my Ford Mondeo Ghia (2001) into the drive last night but when I went to back out of my drive the car wouldn't go into reverse. At first I thought the car had somehow slipped into neutral instead of reverse but couldn't push the car an inch so it seems to be stuck in gear (despite the fact that when I reve the engine it doesnt reverse or drive forwards).
Then when I put the car into neutral and reved the engine it drove forward. The car was driven into the drive and parked 2 foot away from our hedge. After testing the different gear options (in the hope of finding reverse) the bonnet ended up halfway through the hedge.
Rang the callout service but they won't move it unless I pat £70(+vat) becuase it will have to be jacked up and put onto a set of wheels to get it out of the drive. I did ring a macanic because I was initially planning for the breakdown service to drop it of at their garage but they said it sounds like the cogs (I think) in the gearbox have welded together. He was pretty sure from what I just wrote that this was what it was and said it would cost £1,400 (+vat).
This is my first car bought second hand and dont have £1400 so just looking to hear if anyone knows if this is definately requiring a new gearbox.
