I have a 1.8 pinto in my mk2 Escort. I couldn't find a good 2.0 litre and there were a few low milage 1.8's at reasonable money. The pinto blocks are all very similar and no difference in height - check out cam belts and you will find they are all the same size.
The head on the 1.8 has very small valves and is very restrictive. I fitted an injection head and twin choke weber along with alloy sump etc and the engine runs really well.
Did this also,1.8 bottom end.2.0 efi top end and injection.I didnt think as it would work properly seeing as the ports are a different shape but it worked a treat
