Thanks for the advice, attempted it this afternoon and succeeded.

So with a new resistor I have 4 fan speed settings again and with the new motor the fan blows much more powerfully.

Only problem now is I think the switch must not be working properly as I have to hold it between 3 and 4 setting to get full power!

Any ideas what could be the problem?
