I've ordered a new 044 pump now, but still unsure if a pre pump filter should be fitted?

Obviously makes sense in theory, but in practice can an 044 pump draw fuel through a filter?
Does it not need a direct gravity feed, or a lift pump to overcome the filter which would be inbetween it and the tank?

Ade500, apart from all the fancy connections, do you basically just have a a pre pump filter added in-line to the original configuration? And that works ok?
