When its starting to chug. Hit ctrl+Alt+delete. Click task manager. and look at performance and processes tabs.

The performance tab will tell you what your load you cpu is at and how much ram is being used.
The processes tab will show you whats running and whats hogging all the juice.

Always a good place to start.
