I still think I might buy one in the near future to fit a Honda engine. Was it the availability or knowledge you have on the 1.8t that drew you to it? Or both?

Really keen to see more of your thread - any progress?

They do 'just grenade'!! I have an absolutely mint and pretty well as new 04 plate with full main dealer service with 52k miles, that one did exactly that! I'm not complaining though, one his way to work one Wednesday his car went from being a £3.5k car (he actually paid 6k 2 yrs before)to £500 in seconds

Reason I opted for the VAG 20v turbo is both your reasons but with one extra reason, pretty well every 4 pot engine I measured was too long and would require the bulky electric steering rack to be moved or replaced, the VAG 20v is very short and the crank pulley clears the rack a treat. The front of the engine is in line with the centre of the strut tops so the balance shouldn't be too bad.
