If it was me, I would start with pulling the codes from the ABS/ESP system.
That will prevent a lot of guessing and probably save time and money.

It sounds to me like this garage is not up for the job.
If they had the right diagnostic equipment there would be a description for the U0120 code. If they had enough knowledge and again the right equipment they would have pulled the codes from the ABS system right away.
