Bought one of the vac bleeder but it not working...

When opening nipple with bleeder connected its just pulling air and a little liquid vapor by the looks of it, if someone pushes the brake pedal I get full liquid flow as expected .this defeats the idea of one man operation tho...
Tried two cars and all the same, can return to uk supplier but pain in the arse so any one have this issue, am I doing something wrong...
