It is quite possible that you have studs that are too long for the new wheels, I know it is an issue with genuine RS wheels. If this is the case then it can crack the nut apart, damage the wheel stud or damage the wheel stud hole.

The cure is to either cut down the studs, or what I would do is get some open ended nuts, usually fitted to mondeos.
