The fuel pumps on the mk1 focus in general are notorious for giving up too, usually shown in a jerking motion on acceleration and/or with low fuel

You'd need to check the trouble codes to see what is logged, but normally if the switchover doesn't occur its down to the IMRC module. which is expensive from ford.
