All the diesels in the mk3 are the same base engine, borrowed out of the transits, you are correct. And it's actually the RWD spec transit engine not the FWD.

The diesels in the mk4s are totally different and much better, but hold a lot more money.

Given the age/mileage of most mk3s these days I'd be very skeptical unless it has receipts for recent injectors and DMF at the least
