From the symptoms you describe it certainly sounds like coil pack, quite common on zetec engines. However if your mechanic has replaced it then not really too sure!

The cat does get very hot in use, wouldn't worry too much. Only thing I would do is give it a hard bang with your fist, if it rattles then the material inside could have broken up, thus clogging the exhaust and restricting power.
