The problem is that it's not as if the EGR function is in it's own neat little folder on the car's ECU for mappers to find and delete. Actually finding out where the data is is pretty much impossible without spending a huge amount of time.

I'd be inclined to either remove the blanking plate completely, and remove and clean the EGR itself every few months, or fit a solid plate. A 12mm hole is still going to let a lot through it (hence why it took a long time for the EML to come on!)
