TBH with all the money involved, it's more "race to the death" than ever. Just in a different way. Strategy is more important than the sheer fighting on the road. Which to me also has its certain appeal. Yes, it might not be as spectacular as neck-on-neck touring car racing but it still can be exciting as the last 5 laps today proved. F1 kind of transformed into an endurance like racing series.

Also, whenever I watch races from the sixties and seventies I find that the drivers are actually having a lot more respect for each other. Probably because they knew how dangerous it was back then and that a collision wouldn't only end in a bit of shattered carbon fibre.

Today even the youngsters are shown by their modern F1 role models that winning is more important than fairness. Just look at the hair-rising maneuvres you tend to see in Formula 3 and the likes... Some of these guys must think they're invincible.
