When you drop the box I would put a jack and a piece of wood under to support the engine, you do have to strip quite a bit out in order to get proper access to the box but as said you don't have to have he sub frame out.

I've got some pics of when I helped my mate do a flywheel and clutch change on mine, I'll try and get a few posted to give you an idea of what we had out.
