Modern car use next to no fuel when slowing down in gear so infact slowing down and stopping in whatever gear you are in is far more economical than changing down.
effectively correct, in many cases cars use no fuel as i mentioned earlier.
if you change gear fast and keep it above threshold fuel cut revs you can still use no fuel when slowing, just no real need for it.
