Aahh, right. My front bumper is the original, and never been off the car (to my knowledge) with the middle three-quarters oblong and cross-meshed, with the outer parts half round, and also meshed with a stainless strip horizontal along the middle. Not seen one on another e46, although I make a point of looking at all e46's coming toward me!
