trying to mate zetec to auto later c3 with overdrive.
The mondeo flywheel bolted straight on and with the crank sensor the engine starts, however the T converter holes dont line up, not major problem.
However if I try using a mondeo Tc will the input shaft be the same as on a manual box which is about 23mm where as the c3 input shaft is about 19mm. has anyone solved this problem as I cant find a cog to fit over the c3 shaft to make up the difference ?
Or is there another solution ?????
Glad to hear you are getting back on with it.
To use the Mondeo/Focus automatic flywheel/flexplate on the zetec engine to mate with the C3 torque converter, you need to get the flywheel/flexplate redrilled to exactly the same 3 bolt patern for the C3 torque converter. The best way to do it is get a hold of a crossflow or pinto flywheel/flexplate, put, on top of the mondeo/focus flywheel/flexplate, so that the dished sides of each are touching, place a black impact 24mm socket into the centre hole of both flywheels/flexplates. clamp both together and drill through the 3 holes of the crossflow/pinto flywheel/flexplate. This will give you the identical patern on the mondeo/focus flywheel and you can then bolt the C3 torque converter to the flywheel/flexplate. You will notice a gap of approx 13mm between the flywheel/flexplate and the torque converter once the box is fitted to the engine. I got a 3 bolt spacer made from ally to take up the gap. I ran the zetec with C3 auto box for 2 years with no problems whatsoever.
The mondeo/focus flywheel/flexplate is a 4 bolter for the torque converter, C3 torque converter is a 3 bolter. The mondeo/focus torque converter will never fit a C3 box.
If you want pics of how i redrilled the flywheel/flexplate send me an email and i will send some.
Bit long winded explanation but, what you want to do is get the two flywheels, put them back to back, 24mm impact socket through the centre hole, tight fit so no errors, clamp together and drill through the 3 holes. bolt to engine........bob's your uncle, jeannie's your auntie.
