Have honestly never had a problem with the gearboxes in any of my Mondeos (Mk1, 2, 3 and 4). Othe than the dif dying in the Mk2. Have also driven several Mk3s and they've all been fine - Even the company pool car that was more abused than you can possibly imagine has a perfectly acceptable change.
It genuinely sounds like you've got a 'bad 'un'.
