it's common practice with Zetecs for example to use a shim plate to reclaim compression ratio after machining, the shim is sealed to the head with a thin coating of metal gasket sealant which mainly serves to seal the fluids and compresses to virtually nothing when torqued up, and a gasket fitted as normal between the shim and block..

essentially the same as we used here (although we did the other way up, plate to block and gasket between plate and head):
