st170 clutch problem - can anyone help?
Hi everyone,
I'm new to this forum so be gentle!
I just wondered if anyone has had a similar experience to myself. I've had my st170 for just over a year, and recently the clutch started slipping, so i replaced the clutch, but not the flywheel. It's an 03 plate and has done 74,000 miles. With the recent cold weather (below freezing), upon starting the car, it was nigh on impossible to get the car in gear. You could only do it with the engine off. On more than one occasion I had to reverse the car out of the drive, turn the engine off to put it into 1st and then start the car again! For the first 3 odd miles the gears would be a pig to move between - you really had to force it in with some brute force. The feel of the clutch is absolutely fine though. Once the engine warms up, however, selecting a new gear was fine - exactly what you would expect from a new clutch. When the temperature is above freezing there is no problem whatsoever.
The only thing that I can think that may cause this (and I'm not at all mechanically minded!) is that the new, thicker gearbox oil that was replaced when the clutch was fitted is freezing, and so is proving rather stubborn until it warms up.
If anyone could shed any light on the matter that would be much appreciated.
Cheers
James
