i too have been looking into these. at first it was e46 m3's and now i'm more interested in the m5. i have an e46 330ci at the moment and although it's quite good, it's over a hundred horsepower short of being quick enough.
they are pretty bullet proof motors from my reading, as long as they have been looked after properly from the start.
