Default 1.8 TDCI major misfire like symptoms

Hi,

Been having some trouble with my 2006 Focus 1.8 TDCI over the last few weeks. Started on a drive to work, when I hit around 3000 rpm in 4th the engine cut in and out repeatedly. With the throttle buried the sypmtoms got worse, but eased right back I could just about make a little more progress through the rev range.

The last few weeks the issue has come and gone a few times, but in recent days seems doesn't seem to be going away and is getting much worse. Now struggling even in 2nd to get past 3000rpm, and by the time up to 4th I can't get much over 2000.

I'm going to take the car into a local garage on Monday, but not too hopeful of them finding a solution. I haven't had any engine warning lights come on (and presumably no fault codes).

I have read of EGR issues, but ruled this out due to lack of smoke, car seems to be running cleanly enough. I think it must be a fuel issue of some kind. I'd love it to be the fuel filter, but thinking more along lines of fuel pump or injectors.

Can anyone give a heads up if my guesswork seems reasonable, or if it would be easy to rule out any of the above given the symptoms described?

Cheers
