there is nothing wrong with the theory on existing toll roads. it saves time and costs and improves traffic flow. its no different to many parking systems and congestion zones around the country, it relies on you to pay up as required.

however will it be adequately signed and warned? unlikely.

And yes the most worrying aspect is if this technology is proven to work, you bet in 5-10 years we will have national pay as you drive controlled by the proposed blanket ANPR camera coverage on our main roads.

You just know pay as you drive will be a money making system as well. ie all the draft plans they have propose charging during peak hours on main roads going down to zero on side roads or outside peak. It wont make ANY difference to congestion because the reason the roads are congested at rush hour is because people have to go to and from work at those times.

Of course the government know this, hence its purely about money making.

It will also reduce road safety as people will try and go down narrow and slow roads to get to work cheaper.
