I've never been in a situation whereby the tyres are to blame for a crash for not being sufficiently grippy enough. Chances are if you are travelling at speeds where an unforeseen obstacle obstructs your path and caused you to swerve sharply, even the best rubber can't defy the laws of physics and coefficient of friction.
Also, I think calling them a death trap is a little unfair as they are legal to fit on any car and as I said above, people fit and run a lot worse.
