Seems it might only be the Xenons that get the switch. Have a look in the handbook for the position.
You are trying to block the light that normally shines on the left hand kerb, as that will be aimed at oncoming drivers abroad. Worst case, park in front of a wall, put the dipped beam lights on and move your hand around in front of the lights to identify the bit of the lenses to cover.
Don't give the French an excuse to stop you, and don't forget all the other stuff they insist on, including 2 approved breathalysers, bulbs, warning triangle, V5, insurance certificate,driving licence and MOT, and hi-vis vests in the cabin, not the boot (is it one for everyone in the car or is that Spain?).
