It is basically a thrust bearing in the turbo that normally covers approx 270 deg of the rotation and the centre housing is machined to accommodate a bearing that covers the full 360 deg of rotation. Only advantage is that it can handle more boost as I presume the load on the shaft is more evenly spread due to increased support.
