Default Buying a SORN'd car

Evening all

Right, been looking for a runabout for a while now and have been offered a very cheap mondeo. It needs a few small things doing to it so the current owner has it parked off the road and he's SORN'd it. He also doesn't have insurance on it. The MOT also runs out at the end of the month.

If I were to buy it, how would I get it taxed so I can drive it away? The current owner can't tax it for me as he has no insurance, so would I be right in thinking I would have to buy the car, insure it, wait for documents to come through so I can tax it before driving it home? Or is there some kind of loophole that allows you to drive a car straight home etc like there is with the MOT rule of driving straight to your nearest station?

Cheers
