Default Overheating ??

Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone could possibly help.

I have a ford mondeo estate ghia tdci 56plate. During the hot spell about 2 weeks ago I noticed the engine temp was in the red on the max so I immediately pulled over to let the car cool down. I was driving around in town moving at average at about 30mph. This happened on about 2 occasions before I decided to take it to my local garage, as I couldn’t see the fan moving.

After a day and a £60 charge he assured me that the fan was running, I couldn’t believe what he told me and took his word that it was until the same problem re occurred. If I’m honest I don’t think they knew what to look for.

I then took it to a friend of a friend who spent two hours trying to sort out what the problem was he works for a main dealer so I think he is quite clued up.

He put a direct feed onto the fan and the fan ran - so it’s not the fan

He also tried some other tests which seemed quite complicated, what we located the problem was down to this grey box to the side of the fan.

I purchased a new one of these online for about £50 and fitted it.

I started up the engine and the fan finally kicked in for the first few times; I tried the a/c and couldn’t see the fan kick in.

From researching online i've noticed that it should kick when the a/c is switched. I have no problem with the a/c when on motorways or driving locally its always okay.

I’ve tried the car a few times since fitting it earlier today and the fan wont kick in at all - within about 5 mins or driving the read out reads at 90. Whether i'm on the motorway or driving locally.

I'm a domestic electrician but when it comes to cars I have no clue. I’ve been researching this and it seems to be a common problem - with most changing the grey box and all is fine.

Could it be the cylinder head temperature sensor?

I really don’t want to take it to ford.

Sorry to be a main but I stumbled across your page and you obviously enjoy cars - more so than me anyhow.

If you could give me a little feedback I’d be grateful

Many thanks.

Greg
Hi,

I'm wondering if you possibly have a spare minute to answer a question that has been bothering me now for almost 2 weeks.
