Sorry not true apple honour the warranty it's there product
I deal with apple as my work have over 50 iPhones, MacBooks & iPad and some have been bought from o2 as pay as you go and apple have always done the swap out for faulty items
Just because another outlet sells Apple the warranty can still be direct

+ plus I've lready checked this iPhone with them and it's still covered under their terms of warranty
