I'd rather go for a "motorway car" than something used in city traffic only.

If you wanna go really high mileage, make sure the cambelt has been changed (later ones at 150k miles or 10 years, early models might have shorter intervals).

As said above, engine and gearbox are strong. Turbo or injector / pump failure is very rare compared to other modern diesel. It's the trusty Focus 1.8 Diesel engine after all...

Make sure the front and rear wipers work as both seem to have a habit of seizing. And listen for any squealing engine noises, might be the v belt tensioner on its way out.
