. There isn't massive flow around the edges of a manifold. Do some reading about lamina flow if your interested, and Reynolds number. With a viscous liquid flow in a pipe is said to range from zero at the pipe walls to a maximum at the pipe centre. Obviously air isn't a viscous liquid but the same rules apply. Flow is less at the manifold floor and sides and far greater nearer the centre. Hence the use of velocity stacks.
