On a Focus it could be the alternator bearing or v belt tensioner on its way out. Excessive tolerances cause lateral forces to the v belt which is why it starts to squeal, often mistaken for the whining of a bearing.

Try sprinkling baby powder or talcum powder on the belt while the engine is running. Should stop it for a while.
