Whilst not fitted into an escort, i had the same issue with a type 9 box/cosworth engine and the handbrake. I got round the problem by cutting off the top section of the gearbox tail housing, shortened the selector rod and moved the gearstick mount forward by 4" and re-welding it. Works perfectly and has done for years now.

It's another option.
