i think to answer the question we need to ask how far are we looking into the future.

but after that we have to use hydrogen, but as explained because its so reactive it always bonded to something else (like oxygen to form water) and to brake this bond uses energy,
we need a viable way of mass producing quantities of hydrogen, but there isnt an answer as yet,
the true energy form will be Nuclear fusion, but sadly this technology isnt complete yet (even though they have had reactions with a NET gain). these reactors with be uses to drive steam generators to produce electricity, maybe to be used in electrolysis plants to produce hydrogen,
