should there be any play in steering or gear selection
is a little smoke ok or a big no no.
if it wont start once its hot,say if youve stalled it etc etc,is it broke?

to be honest mate it depends how your going to use it as is everyday or weekend and do want power or standard etc...., but remember its only a escort at the end of the day dont worry about it too much, the main area is rust fuse box battery tray arches sills floors sunroof etc.. comman places,
engine wise well again standard is always best and if you want to do mods do it yourself as you will know whats gone in the car, once you have been on a test drive you will know the faults but if you dont know much about cars, take some1 with you who does, as each rs turbo now a days is different, due to age and condition
try finding a rs with as many receipts as possible for items they have had done
