sounds like symptoms of some sort of ends are rumblng/knocking
had the oil light come on while driving at all?
If it had bent valves the engine wouldn't run smooth
any time 
my car ran minted with bent valves,tuners didnt even know what was up with it unytil they took head off,so thats not always the case
