That sensor controls the VVT, the sensor detects oil pressure and gradually adjusts the inlet cam timing to best suit the revs, there will be oil in the sensor. If a sensor goes down it will throw a fault code up, look at the inlet manifold and check its operation if its stuck in the wrong position you will lose power low down depending on which point it got stuck
