Assuming it's a 1.4, 1.6 or 1.8 then it's the return spring at the base of the gearstick, it will have snapped. It's a common problem and a new spring is about £5 from Ford's. It's a fiddly job but it's a fairly straight forward D.I.Y job. You'll need to remove the centre consul to get at it.
