My mondeo ST did the same when i first got it.

Got the codes read and it was the EGR valve. It was replaceda year earlier also as i had the reciept for it.

Im not sure for all mk3's but for the ST i bought a jaguar EGR valve which was £115 IIRC compared to the exact same part from ford at nearly £300
