sorry to be the bearer of bad news but this is pretty typical with smaller brokers and insurance company's. the DD you have set up isnt a standing order as such going direct to the insurers, in the conventional sense, only large insurers, direct line/tesco etc offer this.
when you needed to divide your payments up the company would have taken out a small loan in your name and then you are liable for the full amount until the end of the policy regardless of whether you keep the car or not.

i would have hoped a-plan would have explained this over the phone, and if they didnt then they have to answer for it.

if they offered to waive the charges for proof of sale, then i would follow up on that. anything important should be sent recorded delivery
