Picked the car up this evening, linkage is sorted so I can actually drive the car, but once fixed the garage found the box didn't like 2nd gear, it won't go in at low revs, you need to match the engine speed to get it in, so I think I'm right in assuming the syncro is shot on 2nd (correct me if I'm wrong) so I think a trip to my local transmission specialist and get him to check it out.
1st/2nd gear syncro hub will be shot, it's not gripping the gear to slow it down as the brass bits have worn out from too much quick shifting
you will probably have felt the box not going into 2nd as fast as you would like as the boxes won't slow down fast enough to make the quick changes needed to get a good pull away from the lights, i used to find that my box would take longer to change from 1st to 2nd than it took to use up 1st
