Some lucky escapes by the looks of it ! this is a bit of a essay but here goes !
I'd say the biggest accident I've had was when driving back from Leeds on the A1, I remember I wasn't speeding, certainly under 80mph, I overtook a blue estate car and shortly afterwards I was hurtling through the air with flames pouring through where the windscreen once was, a few more rolls later and a large smash into a Sprinter I was knocked out and woke up probably no more than a minute later upside down.
I have no idea how I got out, my (ex) mate had already got out and left me there it later turned out. Once I was out of the car the driver of the estate car I overtook calmed me down whilst I watched my car burn itself out, not long after the plod and ambulance service showed up I fell unconscious and woke up at 10am the following day in Leeds hospital, turns out again my mate had just left me there and made his way home!
At first they thought the steering rack or joint had failed but I had been awake for a long time and although its not cool its far more likely I fell asleep for a few seconds, the car veered of the carriageway fortunately into one of the only bits of armco on the N/S which the car drove up and sent it airborn then rolling and then hitting the van. The car was totalled, I remember the fuel line on that car was fastened off the inner wing over the cam cover into the mechanical pump and it was a bit tight, obviously when the initial hit happened the engine moved back enough to pull the hose off which is how the fire started.
Just to rub salt in the wound a little more a few weeks later the insurance company refused to pay out as they said fire was caused by the accident, not a cause of the accident, then the salvage yard sent me a bill a month or so later for storage and removal of the car of the A1 which was approx a grand, I took a visit upto to see the company and he said as I was still walking after it he scrapped the bill and just asked me to pay for the recovery which was the only good thing to come out of it.
Finally though the evening I got out of hospital the Police rang to see if I was ok and said if the blood tests came up clear I wouldn't hear from them again as they wouldn't convict me for anything, well months later a summons came through for not producing my documents, driving with no insurance etc... We spoke to the Police and I said I wanted to see a signed producer to which they said it could well of been a verbal producer ( likely I'd remember that after such a accident ) So anyway off to Leeds we went armed with photos of the wreck and the documents and luckily they let it go.
I'd have to dig the photos out as I have none scanned, tbh I'd say I've seen way worse looking cars but being stuck in a car whilst it was fire is not a pleasant experience.
As for my (ex) mate, he tried to take me to court, I ignored any letters I received and when I eventually bumped into him and questioned him on not even trying to help me he said he would share the compensation money with me.... cunt lol
