As above, i recently ran out of fuel in my mercedes vito cdi. It didn't cough or splutter, i just went to the shop, come back out and she wouldn't start!
Started with a tow then coughed and spluttered to a halt about a mile later.
May be worth trying to bump it off and see if that works.
